Frequently Asked Questions: Cabinet Design styles
What is a Face Frame cabinet style?
A face frame cabinet is a cabinet box that has a frame inserted onto the edges of the box, often times the same material species and color of the door. The doors typically are a half overlay with this style. That means the doors cover the face frame by 1/2" so that the doors sit on top of the frame and the frame is visible.
What is a Full Overlay cabinet style?
A full overlay cabinet style is typically a frameless cabinet box that is edgebanded with a thin strip of wood or PVC and stained/painted to match the doors. The doors cover the edges completely for a very modernized look. This is a very trendy and popular look currently in cabinetry. There are also full overlay doors in a face frame build, although this is not as popular as the frameless version, typically because of the small reveals and accuracy that the frameless cabinet builds require.
What is an Inset cabinet style?
The Inset cabinet style is likely the most desireable look of cabinetry. It essentially combines the two previous styles to create a look that is as beautiful as it is durable. The face frame is applied and the doors are set flush to the face frame with very small reveals and tolerances. This look tends to be the most costly of all the cabinet styles due to the added labor, skill and materials it requires.
